Renger van der Zande was pleased to see the back of the Monza GP3 paddock on Sunday morning after a dismal end to an equally dismal season. Having hoped to be a title contender prior to the campaign, the Dutchman has suffered from a series of technical problems across the season.
As GP3 Champion Esteban Gutiérrez departed Italy with a grand total of 88 points on the board, van der Zande languished in a higly frustrating joint 19th in the standings with only 6 to his name, level-pegging with team-mate Tobias Hegewald and one point ahead of other team partner Nigel Melker.
“I'm glad the season's out,” the annoyed 24-year-old, who has been driving for the Ralf Schumacher-run RSC Mücke team, told GPUpdate.net.
“It was actually quite a good race; I drove from 26th to 12th place in five laps, so it was great but once again the car couldn't manage the full distance.
“This time something was wrong with the oil pressure. It's been a season in which just about everything that could have gone wrong has gone wrong and I'm glad it's over.”
Van der Zande went on to express his disappointment over the entire inaugural season of the GP3 Series, signalling that he is highly unlikely to be remaining in the championship next year.
