GP3: Turkey 2011: Sunday race 2 results

Alexander Sims took a dominant victory during the second race of the GP3 season at Istanbul Park on Sunday morning. The Briton started from pole position after his eighth place finish in the first race on Saturday, and never looked under pressure from Michael Christensen and Nigel Melker who completed the top three.

Sims was able to maintain his lead into the first corner, with Status Grand Prix team-mate António Félix settling in behind him. Félix da Costa was initially able to stay in touch with Sims, but by Lap 12 the Portuguese driver had lost pace and was passed by both Christensen and Melker who jumped up into the podium positions.

Andrea Caldarelli was unable to get ahead of Félix da Costa by the chequered flag, finishing just two tenths behind, with Briton Dean Smith a further second down the road. Mitch Evans was able to secure another promising result in seventh place, comfortably holding off the attentions of Valtteri Bottas and Tom Dillmann.

Melker now holds a three-point championship lead over Caldarelli, with the Dutchman reaching a total of 14 points after his victory and third place finish this weekend.

Round 2 of the championship will be staged at the Circuit de Catalunya in a fortnight’s time
