GP3: Italy 2011: Friday practice 1 results

Switzerland’s Nico Müller led the way as GP3 practice signalled the start of track action at a bright Monza on Friday morning. Behind the Swiss, whose best lap time was 1:43.961, Britain’s Adrian Quaife-Hobbs and championship leader Valtteri Bottas confirmed three different teams in the top trio of positions.

The field began the session with Pirelli’s harder tyres on-board before switching to softer options later on, with track surface temperatures continuing to rise.

With Jenzer, Manor and ART all showing promising form, Bottas was just under three tenths of a second off the leading pace, with team-mate and closest rival James Calado fourth quickest but only a further eighth hundredths of a second down.

As Scotland’s Lewis Williamson confirmed three British drivers in the leading six, 43-year-old rookie Christophe Hurni rounded out the 30 runners, 3.4 seconds off Müller.

Practice 2 begins at 4:50pm local time (BST +1)
