Plato takes title lead after Race 2 win
2 October 2011 – Jason Plato made it two race victories out of two during the second race of the weekend at Brands Hatch, leading home Airwaves Racing’s Mat Jackson once again. The Chevrolet driver now leads the title race by seven points over Matt Neal, with the latter and his Honda Racing team-mate finishing back in seventh and eighth.
Pole-sitter Plato’s strong start ensured that his lead was maintained into the first corner, with Jackson having to quickly find his feet in order to fend off the rapid Tom Onslow-Cole. The quick-starting Team Aon driver was under pressure from both Paul O’Neill and Alex MacDowall in the closing stages of the race, but an unfortunate engine failure for the latter put him out of contention for a podium spot.
Tom Chilton followed O’Neill home in fifth place to backup team-mate Onslow-Cole, with James Nash, Neal and Shedden all close behind. Andy Neate ensured that all three Team Aon cars made the top ten at the chequered flag, with WSR driver Nick Foster keeping Tom Boardman at bay to claim the final point on offer.
Plato now sits atop the overall championship standings with a total of 215 points, seven and eight ahead of Neal and Shedden respectively. This afternoon's partly reverse-grid race will see Shedden and Neal start from third and fourth, while Plato will have to do his best to fight through the field from a lowly tenth on the grid.
Race 2 begins at 5.05pm local time (BST)
