Mitch Evans continued to dominate proceedings as GP3 testing continued in Barcelona on Wednesday, topping the timesheets by two and a half tenths of a second. As the morning cloud was replaced by afternoon sunshine, the MW Arden driver led the way from Manor’s Matias Laine and the trio of Jenzer Motorsport cars.
The session began at 9am, although the red flags duly came out just minutes later as Aaro Vainio skidded off-track on his installation lap. When under green conditions again, the aforementioned Laine led the way before being demoted by MW Arden’s Tio Ellinas and team-mate Gabby Chaves; Laine then snatched back the top spot, only for Evans to duly retake the leading position he held on Tuesday.
The timesheets were changing on a continuous basis during the afternoon period, which came after the customary two-hour lunch break, although it was Evans who led the way once again.
In 19th position was British Formula Ford Champion Scott Malvern, still adapting to the GP3 car, as 18th placed Nick Yelloly suffered mysterious handling problems on a brief return to GP3 after his recent podium finish in Formula Renault 3.5.
“We really wanted to do a good job at the end of the season and we’ve really achieved that,” pace-setter Evans, of New Zealand, told GPUpdate.net.
“We’ve been fastest on both days quite convincingly, so we’re really happy with how the car is performing. The boys have done an excellent job, improving the car over the two days, and I think since we raced here we have actually improved the car even more.
“It’s just been a brilliant test and I couldn’t ask for much more. This is my last test for 2011, so it’s great to finish off on a high and hopefully we will come back ever stronger next year.”
GP3 testing continues in Valencia on Wednesday 23 November
