MG has re-launched a full factory entry for the British Touring Car Championship, with Triple Eight Race Engineering running its MG6 GT model. The driver line-up consists of ex Team Aon racer Andy Neate alongside double Champion Jason Plato.
MG last ran a works BTCC squad between 2001 and 2003, with Anthony Reid and Warren Hughes delivering several victories. For 2012, Plato and Neate will be running to full Next Generation Touring Car regulations which includes the turbocharged NGTC engine, it was announced in Birmingham on Wednesday morning.
“It’s really exciting to be involved in a brand-new all-British team and it’s just brilliant that the iconic name of MG will be back on the track,” says Plato, whose own first title came in a Triple Eight-run Vauxhall Astra Coupé in 2001.
“We are delighted that the new MG6 will be seen by millions of fans in Britain and beyond and this continues the famous sporting lineage of the brand,” adds Guy Jones, MG Motor’s Sales and Marketing Director.
The 2012 BTCC season begins at Brands Hatch on 1 April.
