New Zealand’s Mitch Evans has clinched his third career GP3 victory on the streets of Valencia. The MW Arden driver beat Aaro Vainio by 2.1 seconds, retaking the championship lead in the process, as team-mate David Fumanelli finished third.
It was a perfect performance from Evans, who celebrated victory from pole position and the fastest lap. As the Kiwi controlled things at the start, Vainio jumped Fumanelli for second place. Behind, the Jenzer car of Robert Visoiu ran into Támas Pál Kiss – ending his race – as Alice Powell touched team-mate Marlon Stöckinger, resulting in a double pit-stop. The day also ended in an accident for António Félix da Costa, whose Carlin rose from 26th to 12th only to make contact with Dmitry Suranovich.
Conor Daly, team-mate to Félix da Costa who collided so spectacularly with Suranovich last time out in Monaco, came from the back because of a penalty; the American finished in 11th position, having kept out of trouble. Pole position for tomorrow’s race goes to Switzerland’s Patrick Niederhauser, who finished eighth this afternoon.
Sunday’s GP3 race starts at 9:25am local time (BST +1)
