Ellinas fastest as Wartique crashes at Eau Rouge
|2.||A. Felix da Costa||2:28.143|
31 August 2012 – Cypriot Tio Ellinas led the way as GP3 kicked off track action at Spa on Friday. In a typically wet session which preceded the first Formula 1 laps, the Manor driver led the way from birthday boy António Félix da Costa and the two Lotus GP cars.
The track was saturated for the duration, with the best lap time coming in the form of 2:28.100. With Alex Brundle fifth and the leading British driver, championship leader Mitch Evans ended the period seventh and one spot behind title rival Aaro Vainio.
There was a disastrous start to the weekend for John Wartique of Atech CRS. Not only did the local favourite manage only three laps and finish at the bottom of the timesheets, but he lost control at Eau Rouge and headed heavily into the tyre barriers backwards.
The quickest effort came at the restart which followed a red flag but, with even the best taking almost two and a half minutes to complete a single lap, things are wide open for qualifying which is likely to take place in dry conditions tomorrow morning.
Belgium’s GP3 qualifying sessions starts at 9:45am (BST +1) on Saturday
