Kvyat blitzes field in Monza qualifying
7 September 2013 – Daniil Kvyat stormed to pole position for the opening GP3 race of the weekend at Monza. The MW Arden driver, who also set the pace on Friday, clocked a 1:36.933 to lead team-mate and nearest rival Robert Visoiu by more than half a second.
Already in provisional pole as the session entered its second half, Kvyat strengthened his advantage with a stunning sequence of purple sectors. And with yellow flags out in the final two minutes for David Fumanelli's Turn 1 stoppage, the result was sealed.
Marussia's Tio Ellinas put himself in a strong position to recover lost points, claiming third in the closing stages. Carlin drivers Alexander Sims and Nick Yelloly had to settle for fourth and fifth, the pair suffering late spins. Yelloly ran wide at Roggia before sliding across the track, while Sims visited the Parabolica gravel after locking up.
Carlos Sainz Jr. wound up sixth in the third MW Arden machine, just ahead of main title contenders Conor Daly and Facu Regalia who will share the fourth row this afternoon. Kevin Korjus and Lewis Williamson completed the top ten positions.
The opening GP3 race at Monza begins at 4.20pm local time (GMT +2)
