Kubica seals WRC 2 title with victory
28 October 2013 – Robert Kubica's victory in the Rally de Espana was enough to earn him the WRC 2 title at his first attempt. The Pole, who dominated the mixed-surface event, now heads to the final round in Wales with five victories to his name and an unassailable lead.
"This wasn't the target at the start of the season but somehow I knew that if I was able to learn quickly on gravel I could do a good result," explained Kubica, who has been gradually recovering from serious injuries sustained during a rally accident in 2011.
"I was pretty sure that on tarmac I was quite competitive but the rallies in the World Rally Championship are completely different to each other. We managed five wins and a second place from the six rallies that count for the championship - so all good."
Kubica will drive for the factory Citroën team at the Wales Rally GB, where he is a candidate to take the place of retiring nine-time World Champion Sébastien Loeb.
