Ellinas holds on for final win of 2013
3 November 2013 – Tio Ellinas held on to take the final GP3 win of the season in Abu Dhabi on Sunday afternoon. The Marussia driver, who jumped into the lead at the start, led home a spirited Dean Stoneman by 0.293 seconds, while Conor Daly completed the podium.
As the lights went out at the Yas Marina venue, pole-sitter Patrick Kujala bogged down, allowing Ellinas and Stoneman through at the first corner. Daly also took advantage on the exit, forming a top three that would ultimately remain the same until the finish.
Ellinas had built up a lead of more than three seconds as the race neared its halfway mark, but this appeared to take significant life out of his Pirelli tyres, with Stoneman – continuing his impressive debut weekend in the category – slashing the lead gap.
Despite the late scare, Ellinas did just enough to claim the victory, showcasing the kind of speed that had put him atop the championship standings earlier in the year.
ART's Jack Harvey and title winner Daniil Kvyat overtook Kujala in the early stages for fourth and fifth, with Nick Yelloly, Alexander Sims and Dino Zamparelli also finding a way past the Koiranen GP driver, who slipped to 19th amid heavy tyre degradation.
Long-time title leader Facu Regalia struggled to 16th position, two places ahead of Red Bull junior Carlos Sainz Jr., who was removed from the results of the first race.
