Stoneman takes maiden GP3 victory
11 May 2014 – Dean Stoneman claimed his maiden GP3 victory during the second race of the Barcelona weekend.
Despite spinning on a damp track surface during the formation lap, the Marussia Manor driver, who recently returned to single seater racing after surviving cancer, overcame Jenzer's Mathéo Tuscher in a close battle.
Having led at the start, Tuscher soon fell into the clutches of Stoneman, who made his move for the lead on the second lap, slipping past at Turn 4 and keeping the Swiss-French driver at bay through the following corners.
Stoneman pulled away from this point onwards and, although a brief Safety Car period gave Tuscher another opportunity to attack, the Briton was able to take his first win in the category by just under a second.
ART's Dino Zamparelli ensured that two British drivers made the podium, beating Status's Richie Stanaway.
Marvin Kirchhöfer (ART) repeated his result from Saturday to take the chequered flag in fifth position, while Jimmy Eriksson (Koiranen), Nick Yelloly (Status) and Emil Bernstorff (Carlin) completed the points.
Saturday race winner Alex Lynn had initially run as high as sixth, but slipped back to 15th on the opening lap. A gamble to put on wet weather tyres during the Safety Car period saw him fall a further three places.
The next round of the GP3 season takes place in Austria on the weekend of June 21-22
