Alguersuari and Bird sign for Virgin Racing
13 May 2014 – Former Toro Rosso Formula 1 driver Jaime Alguersuari and 2013 GP2 Series vice-champion Sam Bird will race for the Virgin in the inaugural 2014/2015 FIA Formula E Championship, it has been announced.
Alguersuari, who spent two and half seasons at the pinnacle of the sport, before being dropped from the Red Bull programme at the end of 2011, is eager to get back racing.
"I'm thrilled to be driving for an organisation like Virgin. I'm going to be driving for a great team with a wealth of experience and I can't wait to get out on the streets and put these cars to the test," said the Spaniard.
Bird, who has tested for both the Williams and Mercedes F1 teams, will combine competing in Formula E with his commitments in the FIA World Endurance Championship.
"Formula E is going to be a brilliant experience and I can't wait to get started on what will be an exciting new challenge in my career," said the Brit. "I know I'm going to be driving the latest in electric vehicle technology and I'm looking forward to testing myself around the streets of some of the world's most amazing cities."
Alex Tai, Team Principal of Virgin Racing Formula E Team, added: "Jaime and Sam are exceptional talents and real fighters on the racetrack, who bring with them experience of Formula 1 and racing at the highest level. Virgin has always been renowned for its technological innovation and for backing young talent, and we're looking forward to giving both drivers the equipment they deserve to show just how good they are."
The inaugural 2014/2015 FIA Formula E Championship will comprise ten races, with the first taking place on September 13 in Beijing, while the season finale is in London on June 27 2015.
