Race of Champions outlines 'World Cup' plans
17 June 2014 – The Race of Champions will stage standalone ROC Euro and ROC World Cup events in the build up to the respective football tournaments in 2016 and 2018, series organisers announced on Tuesday.
Frankfurt's Commerzbank Arena has been chosen to host proceedings on both occasions, the centrepiece being a race between drivers from leading footballing countries such as Germany, Italy, England and France.
"With World Cup fever in full flow this month, we are delighted to announce this new way for football and motorsport fans to join forces at the next two major tournaments," said ROC President Fredrik Johnsson.
"Frankfurt's Commerzbank Arena already has the most successful public viewings in Germany but now we're taking that to the next level, along with the host of other events throughout the month.
We hope ROC Euro and the ROC World Cup will kick off national rivalries on the racetrack every bit as intense as they are on the pitch."
The two summer events will join the annual end-of-season Race Of Champions. Having been cancelled last year due to political unrest in host city Bangkok, a venue for the 2014 competition will be named in the near future.
