Kirchhöfer takes pole in tight qualifying battle
19 July 2014 – ART driver Marvin Kirchhöfer edged out championship leader Alex Lynn to claim pole position for his home GP3 race at Hockenheim on Saturday.
Lynn led title rival Jimmy Eriksson for much of the session, with the Swede inching closer to Lynn's time before the latter duly increased his own advantage, aided by a lock-up from Eriksson into Turn 13.
But a late lap from Kirchhöfer vaulted him above Lynn and into pole position with a time of 1:28.647, 0.059s ahead of Lynn.
Eriksson was also beaten by Nick Yelloly and Emil Bernstoff, while Mitch Gilbert claimed sixth place on his debut in the series.
Dino Zamparelli briefly led the way before slipping to seventh place, while Richie Stanaway, Matheo Tuscher and Dean Stoneman round out a top 10 separated by just six tenths of a second.
Saturday afternoon's race at Hockenheim begins on Saturday at 17:20 local time (GMT +2)
