Debutant Ghiotto claims pole at wet Spa
23 August 2014 – Italian debutant Luca Ghiotto claimed pole position for his first ever GP3 race during a wet qualifying session at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.
Formula Renault 3.5 regular Ghiotto, who joined Trident prior to this weekend's round, moved to the top of the times with a few minutes remaining and rivals were unable to beat his lap of 2:22.251.
Mathéo Tuscher was an early pace setter but he was soon trumped by Alex Lynn and Jimmy Eriksson as the circuit gradually improved.
The ART trio gambled on slick tyres with just over five minutes remaining but the track surface was still largely wet and they bailed out.
Ghiotto leapt up to top spot with three minutes remaining and watched on as rivals could not get close to his time. His nearest challenger ended up being Carlin's Emil Bernstorff, who was 0.333s adrift.
Eriksson's earlier time was good enough for third position, while Richie Stanaway moved up to fourth at the expense of series leader Lynn, who will start from fifth.
Patrick Kujala was sixth, while Marvin Kirchhöfer slipped to seventh after ART's erroneous slick tyre choice.
Patric Niederhauser will start in eighth, with Tuscher and Zamparelli rounding out the top 10.
Carmen Jordá was an early casualty as she skated into the gravel at Stavelot.
Saturday's opening GP3 race at Spa gets underway at 17:20 local time (GMT +2)
