Team Nordic beats GB to ROC Nations Cup
13 December 2014 – Le Mans legend Tom Kristensen and Rallycross Champion Petter Solberg combined to claim victory for Team Nordic in the Race Of Champions Nations Cup at Bushy Park in Barbados.
Kristensen and Solberg emerged on top in a final shootout with a Team GB represented by 13-time F1 winner David Coulthard and Williams test driver Susie Wolff around the two-lane configuration of the Bushy Park circuit.
Kristensen beat Wolff in the Audi R8 LMS but Coulthard fought back against Solberg in Volkswagen Polo RXs to ensure that the battle would go down to a decider.
The final race between Kristensen and Coulthard was a close affair but the British driver went off towards the end, allowing Kristensen to take the win and the overall victory for Team Nordic.
Team Nordic had beaten France – represented by Romain Grosjean and Esteban Ocon – which recovered from a poor start in the group stages; Grosjean was close to taking France through but ultimately it was the Scandinavians who progressed.
Both squads emerged from a group containing 'Young Stars' Pascal Wehrlein and Jolyon Palmer and the American entry of Robby Gordon and José María López.
The World Touring Car Champion had an eventful time as he had to retire his ROC Buggy during his head-to-head with Mercedes reserve Wehrlein before rolling his Super Stadium truck while competing against Grosjean.
Team GB saw off a determined challenge from local team Barbados as Rhett Watson and Dane Skeete took the battle to a deciding round, before Team GB ultimately made the final.
Both of those outfits had progressed from a group which included the USA pairing of Kurt Busch and Indianapolis 500 Champion Ryan Hunter-Reay, along with Australian duo Mick Doohan and Jamie Whincup.
The individual Race Of Champions takes place at Bushy Park on Sunday.
