Frenchman Alexandre Prémat escaped unharmed from a massive accident in Adria, Italy on Sunday, scene of the penultimate round in the 2010 DTM. The incident happened on the opening lap, when he tangled with Maro Engel on the main straight. He then went off line and barrel-rolled several times.
Although the car was a complete wreak, the 28-year-old was able to immediately get out of what was left of his Audi and he was later taken to hospital for observation.
"That was a pretty heavy accident. I’m happy that Audi has invested so much in the safety of the DTM cars over the years,” he said.
Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich meanwhile was relieved to see his driver was still in one piece: "Alexandre’s accident was a huge shock for all of us. It looks like he came out of it okay,” Ullrich noted.
“If he’s doing as well tomorrow as he was ten minutes after the race when I talked to him, then I’ll be very happy and optimistic that he’ll be in the cockpit again at Shanghai.”
Mercedes-Benz Motorsport Vice President Norbert Haug echoed those sentiments: “Fortunately, Alexandre Prémat’s accident didn’t have any serious consequences and rightly the cars’ safety has always had top priority in the DTM – today you could see how important and right this is,” he added.
“However, this also reminds us of the fact that we can’t stop the continuous development of our safety concepts, but rather we have to go on with it all the time,” Haug concluded.
