Jerez Day 1: Schumacher fastest

10 January 2006

On the first day of testing in the new year Michael Schumacher was immediately on the pace with Ferrari's new V8 engine in his F2005. Giancarlo Fisichella drove the first laps in the R26.

Fisichella was able to complete 39 laps in the new R26.  "We had a very promising first day with the R26," Fisichella said. "I felt comfortable straight away, and the programme was to do as much mileage as possible, while proceeding with all the checks you have to do on a new car."

Fisichella continued saying: "This wasn't a day to go for lap-times, and it was hard to get the tyres working in the cold temperatures. The V8 engine felt very good, similar to our predictions and it was reliable for the first run. My first impression is that this is a car with a lot of potential."

The only two drivers using a V10 engine today in Jerez were world champion Fernando Alonso and Luca Badoer.
