Barcelona Day 3: Badoer fastest, Hakkinen returns
30 November 2006 – On Thursday Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer was the fastest man at Circuit de Catalunya. But all eyes were on two-times F1 world champion Mika Hakkinen who returned in an official F1 event after five years.
Thursday was the third and for most teams the final day of testing in Spain this week. The gathered media at Circuit de Catalunya were all around McLaren's pitbox at 09.00 to watch the Finn complete his first laps.
Hakkinen started relaxed with a couple of installation run. As the day progressed he kept improving his lap times. Hakkinen completed a total of 79 laps. His fastest lap was set at 1.19.340, three seconds slower than Badoer.
At BMW Sauber Timo Glock replaced Nick Heidfeld and completed his first laps for the BMW Sauber team. At Williams their test driver Narain Karthikeyan took over from Alexander Wurz.
On Friday the Toyota team will be the only one left running in Barcelona.
