For McLaren team boss Ron Dennis, Lewis Hamilton's championship victory was the culmination of years of preparation and waiting. It didn't matter one bit to Dennis that the championship was so nearly lost until the final corner as he heaped praise on his star driver.

"It was a really difficult race," said Dennis who has urged his team to remain calm throughout the closing stages of the championship. "We saw the Ferraris and Alonso go away at the start and we couldn't and didn't want to race with them, so we had fourth and fifth to play with."

"Who would have thought that in the end Glock would have tried to stay out on dry tyres in the rain, and suddenly we were juggling with whether we were fighting with Vettel or Glock and what the situation was."

"Lewis is very special, he's the youngest ever world champion," Dennis added. "He still finished this season with more points than any other driver over the past two years, so he deserves to win the championship."

Hamilton is McLaren's first champion since 1999 when Mika Hakkinen took his second title with the Mercedes-powered outfit.
