Dennis to redefine McLaren position

16 April 2009

Ron Dennis is to due to make an announcement on his full role within the McLaren company, and is expected to shift full focus onto road car department as opposed to the racing scene. Dennis, who handed F1 team principal duties to Martin Whitmarsh for 2008, has been with the silver arrows for over 28 years.

The team has endured a difficult start in 2009, with World Champion driver Lewis Hamilton having been disqualified from the Australian Grand Prix in March after an incident occurred which resulted in the suspending and final dismissal of team manager Dave Ryan, who gave false information to race stewards. With Hamilton also having come under extreme criticism from the media, McLaren is set to attend an FIA hearing in Paris on Wednesday 29 April, for presenting the governing body with 'misleading' information regarding an on-track incident with Jarno Trulli which, at one point, resulted in a penalty for the Italian (eventually lifted).

Although he did attend the season-opener, Dennis was not present for Round 2 in Malaysia and is not expected for the majority of the rest of the season. The news of Dennis' possible retirement from the F1 team comes at a particularly testing time for the squad, with Anthony Hamilton - father and manager of Lewis - reported as livid over the directions handed to his driver in Melbourne.
