The Toro Rosso team will debut its first version of a double diffuser at the Hungarian Grand Prix in three races' time. With fifth to ninth positions in the constructors' world championship currently separated by just eight points and with the Italian team holding the latter spot, it hopes for a rapid performance boost with the new component.
When the Brawn, Toyota and Williams teams debuted their 'double-decker' diffusers at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, BMW, Ferrari, Red Bull and Renault protested the designs although, since declared as legal by governing body the FIA and with BMW having introduced their own version in Turkey, the Faenza outfit will be the last to bring in such a part.
"We are the only team not running a double diffuser yet and Giorgio (Ascanelli, technical director) has missed the last two races, working hard to prepare the car for a double diffuser," Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost told Autosport. "It is not just a simple bolt on; you have to change the rear suspension and the cooling, hydraulics and things like that. Also, we've been waiting for Red Bull Racing to finalise what it thinks is the definitive design, as we are not in a position to try several different ones.
"Hungary is a target to have the double diffuser - we will make the best of what we have got for the next two races and we should have some minor updates coming for them. The Turkey weekend has at least been useful in that we have learned a lot of lessons about how to set the car up."
