Marmorini returns as Simon leaves Ferrari
6 October 2009 – Ferrari has revealed that Luca Marmorini has rejoined the team to lead its engine and electronics departments. The Italian, who left the Scuderia to join Toyota at the end of the 1999 season, replaces the successful Gilles Simon.
Having joined Toyota as the Japanese marque left rallying to begin its Formula One project in the back half of the 1990s, 48-year-old Marmorini now returns to the Maranello-based team as Head of the Engine and Electronics department.
'Ferrari wishes to thank Gilles Simon for the important contribution he made during his time with the Gestione Sportiva, first, from 1994 to 2006 as head of Engine Design and then as head of the whole Engine Department,' a Ferrari statement reads as Simon leaves the outfit.
'During that time, the V10 and V8 engines built at Maranello won six Drivers' World Championship titles and eight Constructors', as well as taking 106 Formula One race wins.'
Throughout his time at Ferrari, Simon was regarded as one of the 'Dream Team' which helped the squad achieve immense success in the first half of the decade.
