As explained already by technical head Mike Gascoyne, any trio of a number of drivers could be selected as Lotus returns to Formula One next season; however, team owner Tony Fernandes has explained that the number is down to six, with Malaysia's Fairuz Fauzy the only named candidate thus far.
With the backing of the team coming from Malaysian Fernandes (owner of airline AirAsia), it is no surprise that Fauzy - currently competing in the World Series by Renault but a former GP2 driver and country representative in A1 Grand Prix - has been named as a possibility. Toyota's Jarno Trulli has also been hinted in the paddock as a contender, due to his close working relationships with Gascoyne in the past.
"What I can say is, Fairuz Fauzy is on the list," Fernandes confirmed to Malaysian news agency Bernama. "We will announce the line-up in November." The Norfolk-based team, which will soon set up camp at Kuala Lumpur's Sepang circuit, has already confirmed that it will test its car in February although Fernandes remains generally hushed over the driver selection process.
"I hope the Malaysian driver will be selected as either the second or third driver for the team," he added.
