FIA against leaked 'Crashgate' data

13 November 2009

The FIA, governing body of Formula One, has stated that it is truly against the leaking of data which occurred during the heart of the 'Crashgate' scandal of Renault's race-fixing schemes of Singapore last year.

With documents concerning the issue having made their way onto the internet, the Paris-based FIA stresses that none of the evidence in question was used when making the decision to ban Flavio Briatore, former Managing Director of the team, from the sport for life.

Briatore will attend French courts on Tuesday 24 November, with overturning the ban being his main objective. The disgraced Italian will also be looking to claim at least €1m (just under £900,000) in damages.

'The FIA rejects the allegations made in these leaks and confirms that the decision to impose a sanction against Mr Briatore was made by an overwhelming majority of the attending World Motor Sport Council members,' an FIA statement reads. 'In respect for the authority of the French Court, it would be entirely inappropriate for the FIA to comment further on this matter in advance of the hearing.'
