Mike Conway has admitted that he was 'shocked' to discover that Mercedes had offered him a test in their Formula 1 car for this week. As the Englishman drives the top machine of 2009, he is not hiding the fact that Jerez's young driver test does have an upshot on his overall plans for next season.
After finishing 17th with the Dreyer & Reinbold team in the IndyCar Series this year, Conway will return to driving an F1 this week - on the mornings of Tuesday to Thursday - having first tested with the Brackley squad under its previous guise as Honda.
"I've been working on my IndyCar plans, to stay in the series for next season, but this has certainly thrown a spanner into the works," the 26-year-old Sevenoaks driver explained. "I'm still going to carry on with my plans but we will have to see how well the test goes and decide from there."
With a full-time Mercedes drive alongside Nico Rosberg remaining an outside possibility for 2010, Conway was both surprised and delighted upon learning of his test. "I was shocked to hear from the team and for them to give me a test in a World Championship-winning car," he continued. "It is every driver's dream to drive a race-winning Formula One car and it's great that the team have still kept me in mind after the work I've done for them in the past.
"It would be amazing to get the second seat but there's a long way to go."
