Ferrari launches driver academy

19 December 2009

The Ferrari team has announced that it is launching the Ferrari Driver Academy, a scheme which will see young racing drivers nurtured by the Maranello team, both on and off the race track, with the ultimate goal being for the individuals involved to reach Formula 1.

With Ferrari having never traditionally been a team which has employed new and inexperienced drivers, its latest initiative will see candidates first selected before the Scuderia focuses on their personal development as well as professional activities.

The system will be headed by Luca Baldisserri and will involve drivers progressing through karting to junior single-seater formulae, with the eventual aim being F1. Also involved in the system will be ACI-CSAI, whose Vallelunga racing school on the outskirts of Rome will be a major part of the plan.

"This programme has a very clear goal: to help youngsters develop to the point where, one day, they could fly the Ferrari flag in the Formula 1 World Championship," Ferrari F1 Team Principal Stefano Domenicali explained. "We plan to take an original approach, covering every angle with them, so that they are as well prepared as possible to tackle every aspect of modern day motorsport."

The first contender selected for the academy is France's Jules Bianchi, 20, who triumphed for the ART team in this season's F3 Euroseries before making his unofficial F1 debut for Ferrari at this month's Jerez test session.
