Briatore awaits court verdict

5 January 2010

Flavio Briatore will discover the outcome of his hearing with French courts on Tuesday. Having appealed his lifetime expulsion from Formula 1 exactly six weeks ago, a failure to overturn the ban imposed by governing body the FIA could also have major repercussions for the ex Renault Team Manager's position in British football.

Following 2009's 'Crashgate' scandal surrounding the previous year's Singapore Grand Prix, from which both Briatore and then Renault Executive Director of Engineering Pat Symonds received respective bans for race-fixing, Briatore has since appealed to overrule the decision which places him outside of involvement in FIA motorsport championships forever.

With French courts set to decide the Italian's fate following his court hearing on Tuesday 24 November, the decision will also have affects for the UK Football League; with Briatore being a joint owner of Queens Park Rangers, the 'Fit and Proper' rule states that a ban for an individual from any sporting governing body could result in the same outcome.

The Football League currently has the Briatore case placed on hold as it also waits for the French courts' decision.
