Briatore life ban overturned by French court

5 January 2010

Former Renault F1 Managing Director Flavio Briatore saw his life ban from Formula 1 lifted by a Paris court on Tuesday afternoon. The Italian was barred by F1 governing body the FIA in September following his role in the highly controversial Singapore 2008 'Crashgate' scandal.

Briatore was banned from any involvement in an FIA championship following his involvement in 'Crashgate'; during the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, driver Nelson Piquet Jr. crashed his Renault - allegedly under instruction from Briatore and then Executive Director of Engineering Pat Symonds - to aid team-mate Fernando Alonso's run to victory. The Spaniard has denied involvement or knowledge in any previously planned plot.

In a September statement, the FIA announced the following: 'The World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) declares that, for an unlimited period, the FIA does not intend to sanction any International Event, Championship, Cup, Trophy, Challenge or Series involving Mr. Briatore in any capacity whatsoever, or grant any license to any Team or other entity engaging Mr. Briatore in any capacity whatsoever.'

It remains to be seen though whether or not the sport will see the return of Briatore, who also gains compensation in the form of €15,000 (£13,500). The FIA later noted that the decision of the French courts will not apply until its own appeal options 'have been exhausted'.

Reaction:

- Ecclestone doubting Briatore F1 return
- Briatore considering to sue Piquets
- Briatore biding time over F1 return
- FIA considering appeal options
