Ecclestone doubting Briatore F1 return

6 January 2010

Bernie Ecclestone is unsure as to whether Flavio Briatore will be returning to Formula 1, despite his lifetime ban having been lifted by French courts this week. A comeback for the former Renault team Managing Director is still subject to a likely FIA appeal although F1 commercial rights holder Ecclestone doubts Briatore's return, even if any FIA appeal proves unsuccessful.

Banned from FIA motorsport forever in September for his part in the highly controversial Singapore 2008 'Crashgate' race-fixing scandal, Briatore submitted his appeal in October before a conclusion was finally announced on Tuesday.

"He's happy he's won, of course, but he didn't say he wanted to come back to Formula 1 and I don't think he will," Ecclestone told The Daily Mail before referring to where the case goes from here. "It's not over by a long way - just because a bloody judge has said what he's said doesn't make any difference - nothing's happened.

"The court said it was wrong, so the FIA can start all over again with a new hearing and it will go on and on and on. That's the worst thing. It would be better if they all get round a table and see what they can do."
