Schumacher requests Rosberg car number

Schumacher requests Rosberg car number

20 January 2010

Michael Schumacher has asked Mercedes whether he would be able to race in car number 3 this season, currently assigned to team-mate Nico Rosberg as the latter joined the Brackley-based team first. The 7-time World Champion's request comes with a hint of superstition, with Schumacher admitting that he 'likes odd numbers'.

Returning to Formula 1 this year for his first season since 2006, Schumacher is currently set to pilot the grid's fourth car; despite Mercedes (then Brawn) winning the Constructors' title last year, the prestigious numbers 1 and 2 move to McLaren due to Champion Jenson Button's team change.

"Ross (Brawn, Team Principal) just knows that I like odd numbers," Schumacher told Germany's Bild. For the record, 'Schumi' - whose current numbers of race wins and titles are odd - has driven only a single race with an even-numbered car, that being his first for Jordan (#32) at the 1991 Belgian Grand Prix.
