Fisichella settles for Ferrari reserve role

28 January 2010

Giancarlo Fisichella has said that he prefers to remain as reserve driver for Ferrari rather than race with any of those teams yet to confirm their second driver for the upcoming season. The 37-year-old was present in Maranello on Thursday as the Scuderia launched its latest challenger, the F10.

After racing with Force India until switching to Ferrari as Felipe Massa's replacement for the final five races of last season, it had been possible that the Roman would be loaned by the latter to the former, with whom he achieved pole position on Saturday and second place on Sunday at the Belgian Grand Prix.

However, with the Silverstone-based team having confirmed its 2010 line-up as Adrian Sutil and Vitantonio Liuzzi at the end of November, Fisichella was then tipped as a possible Sauber pilot as the Hinwil outfit is using Ferrari engines once again this year; following its confirmation of Pedro de la Rosa alongside Kamui Kobayashi, though, 'Fisi' admits that staying put is the best option.

"It's better to stay here as the third driver," Fisichella told Reuters on Thursday, adding that moving to a new team such as Campos or US F1 would not be not suitable.
