McLaren not expecting second diffuser argument

McLaren not expecting second diffuser argument

30 January 2010

The McLaren team does not expect another quarrel over the legality of double diffusers as new teams begin to present their 2010 cars. With the McLaren MP4-25 revealed on Friday, Paddy Lowe believes all teams now hold a firm knowledge of the regulations.

With the results of last season's opening two Grands Prix having been subject to protests and appeals surrounding the 'double-decker', downforce-generating devices, Jenson Button and Brawn GP were eventually confirmed as winners in both Australia and Malaysia.

"This is the first car in which we have had a clean sheet of paper to really exploit the interpretation which was developed last year for the design of floors," McLaren Engineering Director Lowe said on Friday. "You will see we have produced a fairly extreme incarnation of that but we won't be alone in that; we believe you will see some pretty extreme solutions on our competitors' cars as well.

"We think the interpretation is very clear. In certain aspects we have sought guidance from the FIA (F1 governing body) and they have come out with very clear interpretation, understanding and guidance and we think that has been made available to all the teams; we are hoping for a much cleaner start to the season than we had a year ago, in terms of the teams' collective understanding."
