First F1 test dawns for Alguersuari

1 February 2010

Ironically, although he may have already driven eight Formula 1 races, Valencia's test session this week will be the first for Jaime Alguersuari. The Spaniard became the youngest ever man to start an F1 race in Hungary last at the age of 19 and will be celebrating his next birthday on 23 March.

With the in-season testing restriction having been introduced for 2009, Alguersuari was the first driver to never have driven an F1 car around a corner before taking part in a full race weekend. "Last year, every Grand Prix was a test, which was a big disadvantage," the Barcelona man admitted.

"I've been doing a lot of training in Austria and Spain with my personal trainer, which means we had plenty of time to get in good shape for the season. That doesn't mean the job is going to be much easier than last year, because F1 is always tough, but I do feel I can be more competitive and better prepared.

"Last year, everything happened so fast and I didn't know the car, the circuits or the team. This year, I will get to drive for several days before the first race, while last year I had no testing at all."

Wednesday will see Jaime take to the cockpit of the brand-new Toro Rosso-Ferrari STR5 - which was launched in Valencia on Monday morning - for the first time.
