Toro Rosso Team Principal Franz Tost has said that, contrary to popular belief over the winter, Jaime Alguersuari was always lined up to be racing for the Italian outfit for the 2010 season. With the Spaniard's management having announced this year's drive at the end of November, the team did not confirm until almost two months later.
With Alguersuari's management having reported on November 26 that the Barcelona teenager would be team-mate to Sébastien Buemi once again this season, it wasn't until January 22 that the Faenza-based team finally verified this.
"Well, for me and Red Bull (team owner), it was always clear that Jaime would be our second driver in 2010," Tost told the official F1 website. "We started a programme with him last year and it was clear that he would also race this season with us, otherwise it wouldn't have made sense to start with him at all.
"We consider him to be one of the most skilled Red Bull young drivers and therefore the decision was easy. It took some time because of some minor contractual issues."
With rumours during the off-season having linked the likes of Takuma Sato with the seat, former Formula Ford and Formula 3 driver Tost denies such accusations. "Everything that has been written about over the last few months is purely winter gossip," he said clearly. "If there is nothing to write about, people tend to read too much into things. There has been no testing - that's the important thing for drivers - so he hasn't missed anything."
