Ross Brawn believes that the new points system for this year will help to spice up the on-track action and generally improve the Formula 1 show. With the top ten drivers now scoring, a gap of seven points between first and second positions is in place to encourage closer fights for the lead.
With the top six scoring system having been replaced with the top eight scheme for 2003, this year will see the top ten cars score as the field is bolstered from 20 to 26 runners. "There is a much stronger incentive for the person in second place to try to beat the guy in front," Mercedes Team Principal Brawn is quoted as saying by the BBC.
"The argument is, if there's only two points it's not such an incentive - if it's seven, it's much more attractive."
2010 also brings with it a new regulation in that the top ten qualifiers must start the Grand Prix on the same, more heavily wore tyres with which they finished Saturday. "There was mixed opinion on that," Brawn continued of this week's F1 Commission meeting. "The teams feel we should see how the racing goes and, if we find we're not putting on the show we want, we'll have to reconsider."
Ross is convinced, however, that the F1 2010 will be a fantastic spectacle. "It has some fascinating elements - our two new drivers (Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher), Fernando (Alonso) at Ferrari, Jenson (Button) at McLaren; there are some wonderful, fascinating elements - I think it's going to be a great season."
