Klien not giving up on F1 return

8 February 2010

Although his chances may be slimmer each time another driver is confirmed at a Formula 1 team for the 2010 season, Christian Klien continues to push for a full-time return to the sport he last competed in at the end of the 2006 season.

Having made his debut with Jaguar in 2004, Klien stayed with the team as it became Red Bull the following year in what was originally planned to be an equally shared cockpit arrangement with Tonio Liuzzi, although the Austrian eventually drove for the majority of races before being replaced by Robert Doornbos for the final three Grands Prix of 2006.

"We are in talks with teams who can offer a cockpit," explained former Honda and BMW test driver Christian, who celebrated his 27th birthday on Sunday. "The driver market hasn't been this active for years so the chances are still good." With just under five weeks to go until Bahrain's opening race of 2010, vacancies remain at the debutant Campos and US F1 teams.

"With my overall package of speed and experience, I can offer good value such as sponsors where others struggle to do this," Klien continued.

"No-one denies the fact that the 'economic factor' of a driver, in the current economic climate, can be a huge competitive advantage; and that's not meaning that Pedro de la Rosa and Vitaly Petrov, for example, aren't also excellent racers."

With other options such as acting as a reserve driver or competing in the Le Mans Series still open, Klien's primary objective is clear. "If it were up to me, sooner rather than later," he continued, highly keen to sign a race contract for the campaign ahead. "In any case, I thank everyone for their patience. The way things are in Formula 1 means that there is hardly ever talk of unhatched eggs, out of respect for the teams' interests as well as their sponsors and partners."
