With 24 of the 26 seats now filled ahead of the upcoming season, only the new Campos and US F1 teams are left to complete their driver line-ups as Formula 2 Champion Andy Soucek contemplates being the fourth Spanish driver on the grid.
With Fernando Alonso, Pedro de la Rosa and Jaime Alguersuari all lined up to contest the 2010 Formula 1 season, never before have there been as many Spanish drivers in the sport. Madrid man Soucek remains realistic after earning himself a test with Williams back in December.
"Right now, no doors are closed," the 24-year-old explained to Spanish radio station EFE. "The negotiations have been conducted and have opened new doors. The two empty seats are USF1 and Campos but other possibilities also are tempting, and in Formula 1."
However, Andy remains pragmatic and will not turn down a reserve option. "Being a race driver attracts all of us drivers, regardless of the team, because being on the grid is what we want," he admitted, "but being a reserve driver, which is more important than 'test driver'…would help me and give me enough time to prepare for 2011 with another year of experience in Formula 1.
"I think to be a third driver is a job I deserve and I wouldn't have to pay for it - I'm interested in that. You must have sponsorship behind you and as a third driver you can bring a smaller sponsor."
