Two concerts for Australian Grand Prix crowd

8 February 2010

2.4-litre V8 Formula 1 engines will not be the only music heard around Melbourne on the weekend of 26-28 March as race organisers for the Australian Grand Prix have once again put together a concert schedule, with a number of famous faces set to make appearances over the course of the weekend.

Only once since 1996 has Australia not hosted the season's opening race, due to the clash with the Commonwealth Games in March 2006, although the feat is repeated this year after F1 commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone wished to start the season a fortnight earlier than in 2009.

With 26 F1 cars on the grid, spectators will also be able to enjoy entertainment from Powderfinger and Simple Minds, with the two concerts being included in admission prices and set to begin immediately after the conclusion of on-track action on Saturday and Sunday.

"We are very excited to be playing at the Australian Grand Prix at the end of March and we hope our many Australian fans will come and join us for what will be a fantastic show," commented Simple Minds lead singer Jim Kerr. "We heard great things about The Who and KISS shows at your Grand Prix over the last couple of years. To be able to come back to Australia as a key part of this year's Grand Prix and to catch up with our Formula 1 mates will be brilliant."
