Nick Wirth freely admitted that the weather conditions at Jerez were a source of much frustration at Virgin Racing on Friday as, following repairs after the car's front wing mounting broke on Thursday, heavy rain prevented the new team from collecting any sizeable amount of useful data.
With a total of just five laps notched up due to rain on Wednesday and eight laps because of the wing breakage on Thursday, Virgin was delayed for over six and half hours on Friday after awaiting a components delivery and fitting the modified wing to the car. With heavy rain coming down by the time the VR-01 was ready, however, aggravation was very much on the team's side.
"Once again, despite working round-the-clock to remedy yesterday's problem, we not only missed the opportunity for dry running early this morning but it was so wet this afternoon that we and all the other teams lost a lot of running later in the session when we were finally able to get going," Technical Director Wirth explained.
"This was particularly annoying given the great efforts by Wirth Research who, rather than just dispatching existing parts from our Bicester base, designed and manufactured new parts, R&D tested them and got them out to the circuit within a 24-hour period.
"Nevertheless…the harder you work, the luckier you get and, with the hours we are putting in at the moment, we are all hoping that our fortunes will change soon!"
