Petrov yearns for dry running

18 February 2010

Although it may be considered of rather academic interest in testing, Vitaly Petrov was higher up the timesheets than ever before in Jerez on Thursday as he managed the day's second best lap time behind Rubens Barrichello despite hoping for a dry race track.

With Vyborg's Petrov becoming the first Russian to race in Formula 1 this year, the 25-year-old's luminous Renault completed 56 laps on the way to a quickest of 1:27.828, just under seven tenths of a second down on the Williams' best effort.

"It was cold and wet once again today but we still did some useful work in the wet conditions and practiced pit-stops, which is good experience for me," commented last year's GP2 runner-up, who hands the R30 over to team-mate Robert Kubica for the next two days.

"I'm now hoping that the final test in Barcelona will give us better weather so that I can do some dry running before we arrive in Bahrain."
