All ran according to plan for Jarno Trulli on Saturday as the Italian made his debut in the cockpit of the Lotus T127. Having planned to circulate the Jerez circuit 140 times, the ex Toyota pilot eventually did so one more than that as the team concluded its first pre-season test of the year.
With Valencia and Jerez having hosted three tests between them so far, with Lotus first attending the third, the field travels to Barcelona this week for a final four days of running before the season starts, with the action set to begin on Thursday at the Circuit de Catalunya.
"It was a very positive day," Trulli said of his Lotus run on Saturday, having been able to make the most of somewhat rare, dry conditions in Jerez last week. "I'm really happy about my first day of testing with Lotus Racing and I was very lucky to have everything right on the car today with no major issues."
After Heikki Kovalainen crashed the Cosworth-powered car on his first day of running last Thursday, the team had had catching up to do following a components delivery although Mike Gascoyne remains pleased with the progress made thus far. "An excellent day today, concentrating on reliability and race pace," the Chief Technical Officer reported on Saturday.
"141 laps from Jarno is a great effort when you consider it's his first day of driving this year and also a great effort from the team, who worked all night to get the car prepared.
"Overall, it's been a very encouraging four days. The main aim of the test was reliability and over the last two days of dry running we have found some directions in setup that will enable us to concentrate on the pace of the car in Barcelona."
