Technical problems plague final Sauber test

1 March 2010

The Sauber team was disappointed after failing to complete its programme on the last day of pre-season running on Sunday. Regarded by many as the underdogs of 2010 on the run-up to the opening Grand Prix in Bahrain, the Hinwil outfit finished Barcelona testing eighth on the timesheets with Kamui Kobayashi.

With Sauber rounding off testing behind 'the big four' as well as Force India and Williams, Technical Director Willy Rampf remains positive over the former BMW outfit's main winter performances, despite a below par ending which saw Kobayashi stop twice on-track at the Circuit de Catalunya.

"After the car ran smoothly during the earlier tests, our final day of testing was unfortunately hampered by reliability problems," explained Rampf, who will now leave Sauber and be replaced by ex Force India employee James Key.

"In the morning it was a shifting problem, which needs to be analysed, and at the end it was a problem in the fuel system - certainly both can be solved before Bahrain. In Barcelona we have been testing new aero parts, which confirmed the performance we expected after the wind tunnel tests."
