McLaren invites FIA to inspect rear wing

05 March 2010

Formula 1 governing body the FIA is set to examine the rear wing of McLaren's MP4-25 following comments regarding the component from rival teams Red Bull and Ferrari. The request specifically regards an opening located on the main plane of the device, where it connects with the car's engine cover.

With the controversial double diffuser row having overshadowed the first two rounds of last year's World Championship, the McLaren rear wing issue is the first technical debate to be raised in 2010. FIA Race Director Charlie Whiting will now travel to McLaren's Woking base in order to inspect the rear wing of the car powering British Champions Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton.

"The wing is different and innovative, yes," McLaren Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh is quoted as saying by The Telegraph after the issue was first mentioned by Red Bull counterpart Christian Horner.

"We have been in contact with Charlie over a period of several months to check that it complies with regulations and have been assured that it does."

"We're very confident that our car is entirely legal," a McLaren spokesperson continued. "We're not aware of any protest. In fact, we've spoken to Ferrari this morning and they're not aware of any protest either."

To clarify, an FIA spokesperson has also said that the possibility of the wing being deemed illegal is unlikely: "We have no concerns with it but we have been invited by the team to view the car, so Charlie is going down to have a look."
