Hülkenberg excited ahead of debut

10 March 2010

Nico Hülkenberg, one of five rookies in the field this year, has kept a close eye on Formula 1 ever since claiming the A1GP championship title for Team Germany in 2006. In 2007 he won the prestigous Masters of F3 title, the F3 Euro Series a year later and in 2009 the the GP2 championship, F1's feeder series. The statistics are positive for the 22-year-old but he will now have to prove himself in the highest class of motorsport, starting this weekend in Bahrain.

"Being a Formula 1 driver is a great feeling and I'm very excited about going to Bahrain," Williams driver Hülkenberg said. "I learnt a lot as the team's test driver, which has prepared me well for the season ahead.

"Working in the factory has also helped give me more of a technical understanding of the car; it won't make me quicker, but it will help me with setup.

"Winter testing was good for us. Having completed a good amount of mileage, we are well placed going into the season. The Cosworth engine is also looking strong, it's powerful and reliable. We have potential but we have to wait to see where the competition is. It's going to be an exciting season and I can't wait to start it!"

Speaking about his specific targets this season, the 22-year-old summed up: "I want to improve over the season and want to take out the maximum from each race, as well as fulfilling the expectations of the team. I don't know which standing I would be satisfied with. However, any driver wants to be on P1."
