Alonso: Championship attack a year-long task

11 March 2010

Fernando Alonso has total confidence in the Ferrari team as he arrives in Bahrain for the first race of the new season. The Spaniard is yet to cross the finish line first since doing so for Renault in Japan two seasons ago but is sure about who his main rivals are and that he is now fully settled into the Ferrari team.

With Ferrari becoming Alonso's fourth Formula 1 team - after Minardi, Renault and McLaren - the Oviedo man continues to insist that pre-season testing times could have masked several surprises.

"We're not comparing the times from over the winter too much or making any predictions for this first race," he explained to reporters at Sakhir. "We're just concentrating on our programme and trying to be as good as possible for the first race.

"I think the four teams - Red Bull, Mercedes, McLaren and Ferrari - can all be considered favourites for this race and for the first part of the championship. Teams like Sauber and Force India should have very good races too."

Fernando does note, however, that Ferrari fully understands that titles are not won on day one. "We will do our best and are fully prepared but we want to be World Champions in November, not March," the former double Champion continued. "The goal is to win the championship but that's not easy at all and we need to work very hard for the next ten months."
