Formula 1 governing body the FIA ran the brand-new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Safety Car in Bahrain on Thursday in the regular race weekend track inspection. The model makes its own F1 debut this year and will once again be driven by experienced touring car driver Bernd Maylander.
The gullwing version of the car will not be available in UK showrooms until the summer although it will be viewable on the F1 circuit as former DTM pilot Maylander is joined by Pete Tibbetts in a car which must be driven on the limit when required over the course of race weekends.
With a 0-62mph time of just 3.8 seconds, the Safety Car remains at the pit lane exit during races with its engine switched on at all times in order to ensure a rapid deployment.
"Together with the entire AMG Team, I am very proud that the new SLS AMG is the official Formula 1 Safety Car," said Mercedes-AMG CEO Volker Mornhinweg. "I'm sure all Mercedes-Benz and AMG fans will be excited to see the gullwing model together with the new Mercedes GP team at the Formula 1 circuits."
Features included which will not be available on road models include carbon fibre exterior mirrors, a characteristic roof light bar with integrated television camera and official F1 logos."
