FIA considering US F1 punishment

11 March 2010

Motorsport governing body the FIA continues to decide how the US F1 team should be punished following its failure to compete in Formula 1 this year. Having been selected ahead of other bidding teams for a place in the sport, the late departure of the Charlotte-based team leaves a space on the 2010 grid.

With a raft of racing teams having placed bids for a place in F1 this year, 13 places were available on the grid and - although Serbian hopefuls Stefan Grand Prix were ready to race - the FIA elected not to allow a late entry following US F1's confirmation of an absence.

The FIA has also confirmed that a selection process is underway to find a 13th team plus a reserve entry for the 2011 campaign.

In theory, US F1 may be selected for next year although the FIA will be considering a variety of elements when analyzing any entry, one of which is its track record.

US F1 has already explained that the FIA has been offered a surety bond for permission to skip one season, with a 2011 debut now the target.

A Thursday FIA statement reads:

'With regard to the USF1 team's non-participation in the 2010 championship, the World Council mandated the FIA President, in full compliance with the new code of practice for disciplinary matters, to take forward the most appropriate action.'
