The first Indian Grand Prix will be included on the Formula 1 calendar from next year, governing body the FIA confirmed on Thursday. The country has been listed as a possible candidate for a race for some time although the FIA was yet to release a statement confirming this.
With the FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) having gathered at Sakhir on Thursday, a brief statement confirmed that India is likely to be on the calendar next season.
The addition to the race schedule follows the confirmation at Hispania Racing last week of Karun Chandhok, who becomes the country's second F1 driver after Narain Karthikeyan raced for Jordan five years ago.
'Subject to final approval of the calendar by the World Council, Mr Bernie Ecclestone, President of FOM (Formula One Management, F1 commercial rights holder), has informed the FIA that India will host a Formula One event in 2011,' the FIA's statement reads.
